JAILS.

From San Leandro, Oakland, and Berkeley to Castro Valley, Dublin, and Hayward, Alameda County is home to a total of ten jails. While this figure may seem high, the number of inmates detained in Alameda County is slowly declining – far quicker than California and US averages.

Whether you’re awaiting trial on a petty theft charge or waiting to be sentenced for murder, there are a wide variety of jails across Alameda that you may be housed in. The largest is Santa Rita Jail, located at 5325 Broder Boulevard, Dublin. With a maximum capacity of 3,489 inmates, this county jail is the fifth largest detention centre in California, awarded the title of ‘mega-jail’.

After the closure of Glenn Dyer Detention, an 834-bed, medium-security county jail, left are many medium-security facilities that come in at a fraction of the size, including 30-bed Hayward Detention Facility, 56-bed Alameda City Jail, 96-bed Fremont Detention Facility, and 202-bed San Leandro Jail, which reserves 70 beds for its female population. On top, 40-bed Berkeley Jail Facility is a low-security jail that offers two juvenile cells.

In Alameda County, juvenile detainees will find themselves in one of three facilities; Alameda County Juvenile Justice Centre in San Leandro, Calaveras County Juvenile Hall in San Leandro, or Camp Sweeney in Castro Valley. While Calaveras County Juvenile Hall is a medium-security facility, designed to house 195 inmates, Alameda County Juvenile Justice Centre – its neighbour – is a maximum-security facility, housing 360 inmates. In contrast, Camp Sweeney offers a more rehabilitative approach, as a minimum-security residential program, focused on steering young males away from criminal activities.

For women convicted of a federal crime, they’re likely to find themselves at Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, a low-security federal prison for females. Based on 5675 8th Street, this facility holds hundreds of offenders, with the addition of a medium-security satellite camp close to the main institution.

COURTS.

Alameda County hosts ten courts; California Superior Court of Alameda, Alameda County Superior Court in Hayward, Alameda County Superior Court in Oakland, Alameda County Superior Court in San Leandro, Superior Court of Alameda in Dublin, Alameda County Berkeley, Civil Court-Small Claims in Alameda, Wiley W. Manuel Courthouse in Oakland, Alameda County Small Claims in Hayward, and Superior Court of California in Fremont.

While the county’s superior courts generally host major felony cases, many of the courts also hear civil matters, parental disputes, appeals, and minor criminal cases.
