COUNTY.

Positioned along the iconic Route 66, San Bernardino is known for its blend of rich landscapes in the form of parks, lakes, and reservoirs, as well as its abundance of museums. While reports show that the region is only safer than 2% of the nation, San Bernardino County is known for its one-of-a-kind culture, overflowing with attractions, arts, and cuisine options, with well-maintained streets and tight-knit neighborhoods.

With a population of 2.18million, this county sees 12,726 crimes each year – 3,288 of which are violent. With a 1 in 66 chance of being the victim of violent crime, San Bernardino presents unique challenges, despite coming in 48th of 58 counties in terms of detention centers per square mile. San Bernardino County is seeing an increase in almost all crimes, with rates well above the US and California average.

JAILS.

Nestled towards the north of the county are three jails: Adelanto Detention Center on 9438 Commerce Way, an immigration holding facility, Barstow Jail on 225 E. Mountain View, a medium-security holding facility, and Victorville Jail on 14455 Civic Dr., a medium-security facility for male inmates.

Four facilities lie in the areas surrounding the city of San Bernardino: Central Detention Center on 630 E. Rialto Ave, a 930-bed, minimum-security facility, Redlands Jail on 212 Brookside Ave., a short-term, medium to maximum-security center, West Valley Detention Center on 9500 Etiwanda Ave., one of California’s largest county jails with 3,347 beds, and Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center on 18000 Institution Road, a 1446-bed facility for males and females, featuring two minimum and one maximum-security housing units.

To San Bernardino’s east lies three facilities, from tourist-central Big Bear Lake through to the expansive Joshua Tree region. The smallest of the three centers are Big Bear Jail on 477 Summit Bl. and Needles Jail on 111 Bailey St., each housing under 30 inmates at a time – usually far less. Joshua Tree Jail, also known as Morongo Basin Jail, on 6527 White Feather Road, is a medium-security jail for males and females, housing up to 80 arrestees at any one time.

COURTS.

San Bernardino County is home to fourteen courthouses; Barstow and Fontana Districts for small claims and traffic violations, San Bernardino Juvenile Delinquency for minor defendants, San Bernardino Child Support Division for child support cases, San Bernardino Family Law for family cases, Rancho Cucamonga District for criminal matters, San Bernardino Justice Center for both civil, criminal, and probate cases, and Victorville and Joshua Tree Districts for all matters.

Big Bear and Needles Districts offer remote video proceedings, while the mental health court within Arrowhead Regional Medical Center is solely for those experiencing mental illness, allowing defendants to access treatment as opposed to going through the traditional justice system.
